This piece is intended as a scathing criticism of widespread social degradation in our present age. To this end, Larrea focused her attention on the figure of an animal that symbolizes better than any other human ignorance and misjudgment. This animal is the donkey, whose image has been used in this same sense on many occasions, ranging, for example, from the satires of English political caricature in the 19th century to some pictures included in Goya’s series Caprichos. In all these cases, the representation of the ass constitutes a metaphor of the brutality and irrationality of man, who oftentimes attacks his fellows like a ridiculous thoughtless beast, without weighing the consequences of his acts.
