Variations on circuits
Series of 32 drawings
Collage, graphite and colour pencils on paper
30 x 40 cm. each
1998
This work takes as its background a Baroque musical composition technique called variation, whose structure consists of a number of short pieces based on a theme, which is repeated in altered form or accompanied in a different manner. In particular, this series of drawings is based on the Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) composed by J. S. Bach. This musical structure begins with the Aria, which acts as the fundamental musical idea. Afterwards, it is followed by 30 variations, which are repetitions of the same main theme with melodic, rhythmic, or harmonic variations. Finally, the work ends with a reprise or repetition of the Aria.
Following this musical structure, in this series of drawings there is also a constant theme reinterpreted over 30 different images. The constant subject is a schematic design of an electronic circuit diagram, which is represented with its memory and their electrical connections. These electrical components are combined and changed over 30 variations.
